High-voltage OWTS HV cable measurement

Our company carried out OWTS partial discharge test in Slovakia in Nitra region, on a 110 kV, THPE insulated dual system connecting two substations.

With the help of the OWTS® HV 150 equipment procured in the ongoing European Union resource development tender, many system operators’ dream will now come true: a nondestructive test may allow a snapshot be taken of the status of the high voltage cable, comparing which with the results of the repeated test at a later phase of the cable’s lifecycle an picture of the ageing process of the cable may be drawn up obtaining information on its expected life expectancy, provided operational conditions will remain similar. The OWTS® HV 150 equipment is able to perform 150 kV peak voltage testing, with a basic sinusoidal signal of frequency between 20-300 Hz set out in 2004 by the IEC 60840 standard, making it suitable in the domestic practice (for 76/132 kV) along the constructed cable line for voltage testing at 1.4 U and to test and confine partial discharges. Cables are inspected under voltage-free conditions. In the course of the measurement, partial discharge according to MSZ EN 60270: 2001 (IEC 60270:2000) was examined, with the additional exact determination of their locations, and the general extent of deterioration of the cable insulation was deduced from the change of the tan δ value as a function of the voltage. During the Slovakian measurement, one system was examined each day, and was concluded in each case with excellent results: no partial discharge was observed in the cable systems.
